A Georgia SR-22 is not a type of insurance. It is a certificate your insurer files with the Department of Driver Services to prove you carry required liability coverage. Here is which suspensions call for one, how long it lasts, what a lapse triggers and what it all costs, cited to DDS and the Georgia Code.

Quick answer

A Georgia SR-22 is a certificate, filed by your insurer with the Department of Driver Services, proving you carry required liability coverage. DDS requires an SR-22A for a second or later no-insurance conviction, and its DUI reinstatement rule calls for an SR-22. Either way, plan on keeping it three years from the conviction date. If the policy ends, the insurer notifies DDS and your license is at risk.

  • The SR-22 is paperwork, not coverage. The policy behind it is what protects you.
  • Georgia uses two forms: the SR-22 (DUI reinstatement) and the SR-22A (repeat no-insurance convictions).
  • Since May 14, 2025, a DUI conviction carries higher minimums: 50/100/50 for a first, 100/300/100 for a second or later, for three years.
  • A lapse is reported. The insurer files a cancellation notice (SR-26) and DDS can cancel your license.

Do this: read your Official Notice of Suspension so you know which form you owe, then let us quote a policy that files it. One form, 25 carriers, and we confirm which ones file your Georgia certificate before you buy.

The letter from the Department of Driver Services says you need an "SR-22" before you can drive again, and nobody explains what that is. You call around, your current insurer says it doesn't file them, and the next one asks whether you need an SR-22 or an SR-22A, which nobody told you was a question.

This is the walkthrough we give drivers who call our Ringgold or Augusta office in that spot. Georgia's rules changed in 2025, so every legal statement below is cited to the Georgia Code or a DDS rule you can check.

What Is an SR-22 in Georgia?

The short answer: an SR-22 is a certificate of insurance. Your insurer fills it out and sends it to the Department of Driver Services (DDS) to prove you have a liability policy in force. It is not a policy and it does not pay claims.

People say "SR-22 insurance" because you only get the certificate by buying a policy from a company willing to file it. The SR-22 is the insurer's promise to the state that the policy exists and that it will tell DDS if the policy ends. DDS rules title the form the "Georgia Safety Responsibility Insurance Certificate," and it must come from an insurer authorized in Georgia. Georgia has two versions, and the one you need depends on why you were suspended:

FormWhat it is used for in GeorgiaWho files it
SR-22Reinstatement after a DUI suspension under DDS Rule 375-3-3-.24, certifying the higher limits O.C.G.A. § 33-7-16 now requiresYour insurer
SR-22AReinstatement after a second or later conviction for driving without proof of insurance (O.C.G.A. § 40-6-10), under Rule 375-3-3-.17Your insurer
SR-26The insurer's notice to DDS that the certified policy is being cancelledYour insurer, if coverage ends
Proof of insurance onlyReinstating a first no-proof-of-insurance suspensionYou show it to DDS

Before you buy anything, confirm the insurer files the exact Georgia form your suspension calls for. A company that sells you a Georgia policy but won't file the form doesn't get you reinstated.

When Does Georgia Require an SR-22?

The short answer: the two clearest triggers in DDS's rules are a second or later conviction for driving without insurance (SR-22A) and reinstatement after a DUI (SR-22). Many other suspensions do not require one, so check your notice before you pay for a filing you don't need.

Second or later no-insurance conviction. DDS's page for multiple no-insurance convictions is blunt: "All customers convicted of a second or more 'No Insurance' citation must purchase and maintain a SR-22A Insurance Policy." You must serve 90 days of the suspension to be eligible, and the coverage stays in place three years. DDS says it can also accept a standard SR-22 marked "Paid In Full." Source: DDS Reinstatement FAQs, No Proof of Insurance (Multiple Convictions).

DUI. This is the part that changed. SB 121, signed May 14, 2025, created O.C.G.A. § 33-7-16. DDS's reinstatement rule for DUI suspensions, Rule 375-3-3-.24 (approved by the DDS board in 2025, published in the Rules and Regulations of the State of Georgia, and citing § 33-7-16 as authority), calls for an SR-22 certifying the new limits, filed and maintained three years from the conviction date. DDS's first-offense DUI FAQ page has not caught up: it still lists only the 120-day wait, a DUI Risk Reduction Program certificate and the fee. Confirm your exact requirements with DDS or your attorney.

The law, translated
What it saysO.C.G.A. § 33-7-16(a) through (c): after a DUI conviction, minimum liability rises to 50/100/50 (first) or 100/300/100 (second or subsequent), maintained "uninterrupted for a period of three years from the date of conviction." Subsection (d) says these amounts replace the standard minimum.
In plain EnglishGeorgia's usual 25/50/25 minimum doesn't apply to you for three years. A 25/50/25 policy with an SR-22 attached is the wrong policy.
What to doTell every insurer the filing is for a DUI and give them the conviction date. We quote the higher limits from the start so the certificate matches what DDS checks.

What usually does not require an SR-22. A first no-proof-of-insurance suspension: DDS's first-offense page asks for 60 days served, proof of insurance and the fee. A points suspension (15 points in 24 months): DDS's points reinstatement page lists a defensive driving course, not an SR-22. A registration lapse handled by the Department of Revenue is a tag problem with its own fees. Habitual violator, out-of-state and court-ordered cases have their own conditions; your Official Notice of Suspension settles it.

Watch for this

In our office, the costliest SR-22 mistake isn't the price. It's the wrong form: a financed SR-22 when DDS wanted a prepaid SR-22A, or a 25/50/25 policy for a DUI filing that now needs 50/100/50. DDS rejects it and the suspension continues.

How Long Do You Keep an SR-22, and What If the Policy Lapses?

The short answer: three years from the date of conviction for both the DUI SR-22 and the no-insurance SR-22A. If the policy cancels inside that window, your insurer files an SR-26 with DDS and your license can be cancelled.

The clock runs from the conviction date, not the day you reinstate. Rules 375-3-3-.17 and .24 both say "filed and maintained for three (3) years from the date of conviction," so time spent suspended before reinstating may already count. Here is how a lapse plays out under the DDS rules:

  1. The insurer files an SR-26. DDS must receive the cancellation notice at least 30 days before the cancellation takes effect.
  2. Prepaid certificates can't be dropped for non-payment. A certificate not marked "premium financed" is treated as paid in full, and DDS won't accept an SR-26 for non-payment on it. The statutory language printed on the Rule .17 certificate also bars cancelling a certification within 12 months of its effective date, except in limited cases.
  3. Financed certificates have conditions, including a 180-day window before cancellation for non-payment. For DUI filings, Rule .24 requires the first six months marked "Paid in Full" before financing.
  4. DDS acts on the notice. For SR-22A cases, DDS says the cancellation "will result in the cancellation of your driver's license."
Tip: switching carriers mid-filing

You can change insurers during your three years, but the new certificate has to be on file before the old policy ends. We bind the new policy, confirm the new filing, then cancel the old one. Never cancel first and shop second.

What Does an SR-22 Cost in Georgia?

The short answer: the certificate is cheap and the violation is expensive. Expect a filing fee of roughly $15 to $50, a DDS reinstatement fee of $200 to $310, and a premium that can run about double a clean-record rate.

CostWho charges itAmount

Source: MoneyGeek, Georgia SR-22 car insurance, updated August 19, 2026. Sample: 40-year-old man, good credit, 2012 Toyota Camry LE, 12,000 miles a year; minimum is 25/50/25, full coverage is 100/300/100 with a $1,000 deductible. Benchmarks, not quotes.

One honest caveat: MoneyGeek's minimum row is priced at 25/50/25, but a driver with a DUI conviction must carry at least 50/100/50 under § 33-7-16 (in force since May 14, 2025), so a real post-DUI minimum policy usually costs more than that average.

Illustrative scenario (not a quote, not a real case)

An Augusta-area driver is convicted of a second no-insurance citation. After 90 days of suspension, they need a prepaid SR-22A policy and the DDS fee before driving again.

DDS reinstatement fee (second or later, by mail or online)$300 Insurer filing fee (assumed, within the published $15 to $50 range)$25 Six months of premium, prepaid (assumed at $150 a month)$900 Cash needed to reinstate$1,225

The premium is an assumption; yours depends on the carrier, record, vehicle and ZIP. The lesson is the prepayment: plan for the whole term up front before you call.

Do You Need an Owner or Non-Owner SR-22 in Georgia?

The short answer: if you own and drive a car, the certificate attaches to your regular auto policy. If you don't own a car but need to drive legally, a non-owner policy with the filing attached can satisfy DDS.

A non-owner policy is liability coverage for a driver without a car of their own. It typically follows you in borrowed or rented vehicles, pays after the car owner's coverage, and does not cover damage to the car you're driving. DDS's multiple-conviction page accepts an "SR-22/SR-22A 'Non-Owners' Insurance Policy" kept three years from conviction and prepaid every six months, and says it is mandatory for SR-22A customers without a vehicle. If someone in your household owns a car you drive regularly, most insurers will want you listed on that policy instead. The full comparison is its own guide: do you need non-owner SR-22 insurance in Georgia?

What If You Move to or From Tennessee or South Carolina With an SR-22?

The short answer: the filing belongs to the state that suspended you. Moving doesn't end it. You keep a filing that meets the suspending state's rules, from an insurer that can file there, until that state releases you.

With offices near the Tennessee line and across the Savannah River from South Carolina, we see this constantly.

  • Georgia suspension, you move away. Georgia's three-year requirement still runs. DDS says "Out of state SR-22 insurance policies must be presented with a receipt showing valid payment to the insurance company," and GEICO's SR-22 page notes an out-of-state SR-22 generally must come from an insurer licensed in the state that imposed the requirement.
  • Tennessee suspension, you move to Georgia. Tennessee's SR-22 is proof of future financial responsibility under Tenn. Code Ann. § 55-12-114, must come from an insurer licensed in Tennessee, and is "maintained for the length of the suspension or revocation period," per the Tennessee Department of Safety.
  • South Carolina suspension, you move to Georgia. South Carolina's DMV sets its own SR-22 rules and duration. We confirm the requirement on your SC notice before quoting.

Get written confirmation from the suspending state before assuming a filing has ended. If you live in Georgia and commute to Chattanooga, your policy is still written at your Georgia address; see the Northwest Georgia and Chattanooga metro auto insurance guide.

Which Insurers File SR-22s in Georgia, and Should You Buy Only the Minimum?

The short answer: several carriers file Georgia certificates, including nonstandard carriers built for drivers the standard market turns down. Buy the coverage you need first. The filing only proves a minimum.

Not every insurer files SR-22s, and some that do won't write a recent DUI. The nonstandard market exists for drivers with violations, lapses or suspensions. Prices are higher, but it's often the difference between "no" and a policy that gets you reinstated. Two of our direct carriers publish their process: Progressive says it "electronically files your SR-22 form with the department of motor vehicles in the requested state" and offers non-owner SR-22 policies, and GEICO says it files electronically or by mail for a one-time fee per filing. Several of our other direct carriers also file SR-22s; we confirm which ones file your Georgia form, at your required limits, on your quote.

Now the coverage question. The certificate proves you carry the minimum for your situation: 25/50/25 for an SR-22A case, 50/100/50 or 100/300/100 after a DUI. Those are floors, and insurers price SR-22 drivers as higher risk for a reason. Our guide to Georgia's 25/50/25 requirement shows how fast a minimum limit runs out, and the Georgia UM coverage guide explains why uninsured motorist coverage still matters. When Does This Answer Change?

The short answer: the rules above cover a typical Georgia driver with a personal auto policy. These situations change the advice, and some change the legal requirement.

  • You were just arrested for DUI. Talk to a Georgia DUI attorney before you talk to an insurer about a filing. Post-arrest deadlines are short, and the plea and conviction date decide what DDS requires. We place insurance; we don't give legal advice.
  • It's your second DUI. The § 33-7-16 minimum jumps to 100/300/100 for three years, and reinstatement requirements differ from a first offense.
  • You drive an employer's vehicle. Rule .24 lets an employer provide the proof for its own vehicles, and DDS then notes that restriction on your license. CDL consequences follow separate rules.
  • You want to finance the premium. DUI filings need six months paid in full first, and financed SR-22A certificates carry a 180-day rule. Budget for prepayment.
  • You had an accident. See car insurance after an accident in Georgia for the rate side.
  • Your policy lapsed but no one mentioned an SR-22. A first lapse is usually a registration and proof-of-insurance problem. Guide coming: getting car insurance after a lapse in Georgia.
If you take one thing from this guide

The SR-22 proves you have insurance; it is not the insurance. Get the right Georgia form at the right limits, and never let the policy cancel before a replacement certificate is filed.

The Bottom Line

A Georgia SR-22 is a certificate your insurer files with DDS to prove you carry required liability coverage. The clearest triggers in DDS's rules are a second or later no-insurance conviction (SR-22A) and DUI reinstatement (SR-22, at the higher limits Georgia set in 2025). Plan on three years from the conviction date, and treat any cancellation as a direct line to another suspension.

The filing fee is small; the DDS fee, the premium and a prepaid term are not, and they vary widely by carrier. We quote 25 carriers, confirm which ones file your Georgia certificate at your required limits, and build the policy around protecting you, not just satisfying DDS.

Related questions

Can I get an SR-22 if I don't have a car?

Yes. DDS accepts an SR-22 or SR-22A non-owner policy, and for SR-22A cases without a vehicle it says one is mandatory. It's liability coverage that follows you in borrowed or rented cars. See our non-owner SR-22 guide.

Will my rates drop when the SR-22 ends?

Often, but not overnight. The filing ending doesn't erase the conviction, and carriers look back several years. Re-shop the policy when the three years end, because a different carrier may price your improved record better.

Where does an SR-22 fit in Georgia auto insurance overall?

It's one piece of the larger picture of required coverage, limits and cost. Our Georgia auto insurance guide covers the rest, and our Georgia auto insurance page explains what we do on every quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is an SR-22 in Georgia?

An SR-22 is a certificate of insurance, not an insurance policy. Your insurance company files it with the Georgia Department of Driver Services to prove you carry the liability coverage the state requires after certain suspensions. DDS rules title the form the Georgia Safety Responsibility Insurance Certificate, and it must come from an insurer authorized in Georgia. Georgia uses the SR-22 for DUI reinstatement and the SR-22A for a second or later conviction for driving without insurance. If the policy ends, the insurer notifies DDS with an SR-26 cancellation form.

How long do you need an SR-22 in Georgia?

Plan on three years from the date of conviction. DDS Rule 375-3-3-.17 requires an SR-22A to be filed and maintained for three years from conviction after a second or later no-insurance conviction, and DDS Rule 375-3-3-.24 uses the same three-year language for DUI reinstatement. O.C.G.A. section 33-7-16 also requires the higher post-DUI liability limits to be kept uninterrupted for three years from conviction. Because the clock starts at conviction, time spent suspended before reinstating can count toward it. Confirm your end date with DDS.

What is the difference between an SR-22 and an SR-22A in Georgia?

Both are Georgia certificates of insurance filed by your insurer with DDS. The SR-22A is the form DDS requires after a second or later conviction for driving without proof of insurance, and it generally goes with a policy paid in full for each six-month term, with financing allowed only under DDS conditions. The SR-22 is the form DDS Rule 375-3-3-.24 uses for DUI reinstatement, certifying at least 50/100/50 liability after a first DUI conviction or 100/300/100 after a second. Your suspension notice tells you which one you owe.

How much does an SR-22 cost in Georgia?

There are three costs. The insurer's filing fee runs about $15 to $50, according to MoneyGeek in August 2026. DDS charges a reinstatement fee, $200 by mail or online for a first no-insurance or first DUI suspension for drivers 21 and over, and $300 for a second or later no-insurance suspension, with in-person payments $10 higher. The largest cost is the premium increase from the violation. MoneyGeek's Georgia sample showed minimum coverage after a DUI at $154 a month against $80 for a clean record. Those are benchmarks, not quotes.

What happens if my SR-22 insurance lapses in Georgia?

Your insurer files an SR-26 cancellation notice with DDS, which DDS rules say it must receive at least 30 days before the cancellation takes effect. On SR-22A cases, DDS warns that the cancellation will result in the cancellation of your driver's license. DDS will not accept an SR-26 for non-payment on a certificate treated as paid in full, and financed certificates carry a 180-day window before cancellation for non-payment. If you switch carriers, have the new certificate filed before the old policy ends.
