Progressive and GEICO are two of the best-known auto insurers in Georgia, and they win for different drivers. Here are the published 2026 benchmarks, the add-ons and discounts each carrier publishes, service and financial strength data, and who tends to fit which. Both are direct appointments for our agency, so we quote them side by side.

Quick answer

Neither Progressive nor GEICO is cheaper for every Georgia driver. On MoneyGeek's August 2026 sample driver, GEICO averaged $105 a month for full coverage and Progressive $118. GEICO scored higher in J.D. Power's 2025 Southeast satisfaction study, while Progressive publishes more add-ons. Both carry Superior AM Best ratings. Your real answer comes from quoting both at identical coverage.

  • GEICO often leads on the benchmark price for a clean-record adult with good credit.
  • Progressive publishes the longer add-on menu: loan/lease payoff, custom parts, rideshare, pet injury, Deductible Savings Bank.
  • Georgia law treats both the same: 25/50/25 minimum, and UM coverage stays on unless you reject it in writing.
  • We quote both directly, plus Mercury, Travelers, National General and more, in one conversation.

Do this: pick your limits, UM type and deductibles first, then have us run that exact coverage through Progressive and GEICO (and the rest of our 25 carriers) so the comparison is apples to apples.

You've seen the gecko and you've seen Flo. Maybe you ran a quote on each website and got two numbers that don't match what your neighbor pays. The real question isn't which ad is funnier. It's which company will price your household fairly, cover what you need, and treat you right after a wreck on I-75 or a hailstorm in Columbia County.

We're an independent agency in Ringgold and Augusta, appointed with both, so we don't have a horse in this race. This guide compares them the way we do at our desk: same coverage, sourced and dated data, and an honest read on who each one suits. It's a companion to the best car insurance companies in Georgia and sits under our Georgia auto insurance guide.

Is Progressive or GEICO Cheaper in Georgia?

The short answer: GEICO came in lower on the most recent published Georgia benchmarks, by roughly $13 to $21 a month for full coverage, but those numbers describe one sample driver, not you.

A rate benchmark is a published average for a defined sample driver. MoneyGeek's Georgia ranking, updated August 26, 2026, priced a 40-year-old man with good credit, a clean record, 100/300/100 liability and $1,000 deductibles. On that profile, GEICO averaged $105 a month and Progressive $118. MoneyGeek's cheapest-carrier page, updated October 15, 2026, shows the same order for clean-record adults: GEICO $103 full and $41 minimum, Progressive $124 and $59.

Annual gap between the two on that one profile

Source: MoneyGeek, Best Car Insurance in Georgia, updated August 26, 2026. Sample-profile averages, not quotes. How we cite figures is in our rate and quote data methodology.

A $13 monthly gap on a sample driver can flip the moment your household looks different. Add a 17-year-old, a speeding ticket, a Fort Oglethorpe ZIP, a financed truck or a bruised credit score, and each carrier's formula responds differently. In our office, Progressive and GEICO trade places more often than people expect, and the winner for a single adult commuter is often not the winner once a teen is added.

For the wider price picture, including carriers that beat both in some studies, see the cheapest car insurance in Georgia and what Georgia drivers pay by age and record.

Illustrative scenario (not a quote, not a real claim)

An Evans couple thinks two online quotes show a $240-a-year winner. Lined up, the quotes aren't built the same.

Quote A, as first shown (25/50/25, reduced-by UM, $1,000 deductibles)$1,260 a year Quote B, as first shown (100/300/100, add-on UM, $500 deductibles)$1,500 a year Quote A rebuilt to match Quote B's coverage$1,590 a year Real difference at identical coverageB is $90 a year lower

The "cheaper" quote was cheaper because it covered less. All numbers are illustrative; your quotes depend on your drivers, vehicles, address and record.

What Georgia Rules Apply to Both Policies?

The short answer: the same ones. Georgia requires 25/50/25 liability from every carrier, requires uninsured motorist coverage to be offered, and lets you choose how that UM coverage pays.

Georgia's minimum liability is 25/50/25: $25,000 for injuries to one person, $50,000 for all injuries in one accident and $25,000 for property damage, required by O.C.G.A. § 33-34-4, with the dollar amounts set through § 40-9-37 and § 33-7-11(a)(1)(A). Both carriers file their Georgia rates and forms with the Georgia Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire. Collision and comprehensive are lender requirements, not state law, at either company.

The law, translated
What it saysO.C.G.A. § 33-7-11 requires uninsured motorist coverage on every Georgia auto liability policy unless the named insured rejects it in writing, and it allows two forms: "add-on," which pays on top of the at-fault driver's liability limits, and "reduced-by," which subtracts what the at-fault driver's insurer pays from your UM limit.
In plain EnglishWhether you buy from Progressive or GEICO, UM is on your policy unless you signed it away. The form you pick decides whether your coverage stacks on top of the other driver's or gets shrunk by it.
What to doWhen you compare the two carriers, check the UM line on both quotes. If one says add-on and the other says reduced-by, the prices aren't comparable yet.

What Coverage Options Do Progressive and GEICO Offer?

The short answer: both write the standard Georgia coverages; Progressive publishes more add-ons, and GEICO's standout extra is mechanical breakdown insurance.

An endorsement (or add-on) is optional coverage attached to the base policy, and it's where these two differ most. The table lists only what each company publishes on its own site as of October 2026; we confirm each item on your actual Georgia quote.

Sources: Progressive coverage options; GEICO mechanical breakdown insurance; GEICO Emergency Roadside Service; GEICO accident forgiveness. Checked October 17, 2026. "Ask on your quote" means GEICO's public pages didn't confirm it, not that it's unavailable.

Progressive's add-ons. Loan/lease payoff covers the gap between what you owe and what a totaled car is worth, up to 25 percent of its actual cash value (ACV, the value after depreciation). The rideshare endorsement covers the app-on, waiting-for-a-request period a personal policy usually excludes. Pet injury coverage comes with collision, and the Deductible Savings Bank trims $50 off your deductible for each clean six months.

GEICO's add-ons. Mechanical breakdown insurance works like an extended warranty inside your auto policy; GEICO says it can be kept up to seven years or 100,000 miles. Emergency Roadside Service covers towing (up to 15 miles in most states), jump starts, tire changes, lockouts and fuel delivery. Accident forgiveness can be earned free after five accident-free years, and GEICO's excluded-state list (California, Connecticut, Massachusetts) doesn't include Georgia. GEICO says the purchasable upgrade isn't offered in every state, so we confirm it on your quote.

Tip for financed and leased cars

If you owe more than the car is worth, gap-style coverage matters more than a few dollars a month. With GEICO, ask us to confirm what's available on your quote before choosing on price, and we'll check your lender isn't already selling you gap coverage.

Which Discounts Do Progressive and GEICO Offer in Georgia?

The short answer: both offer the common ones (multi-policy, multi-car, good student, telematics), named differently, and one Progressive discount isn't available in Georgia.

A discount is a published premium reduction you earn by meeting a condition, and each carrier names its own.

Progressive lists three-year safe driving, five-year accident-free and claim-free, Snapshot, multi-policy, multi-car (a countrywide average of 12 percent), sign online, paperless, pay in full, automatic payment, continuous insurance, teen driver, good student (from 5 percent), distant student and homeowner. Its discount page notes the online quote discount is not available in Georgia.

GEICO lists multi-policy, membership and employee discounts across more than 800 groups, military, federal employee, student, drivers over 50 and defensive driving course discounts where allowed. For Augusta families tied to Fort Gordon, ask about the military and federal employee lines by name.

Snapshot vs. DriveEasy. Both are telematics programs, meaning part of your price depends on how you actually drive. Progressive's Snapshot uses an app or plug-in device, reports an average $328 savings for customers who earned a discount at renewal, and says your rate may increase with high-risk driving (about 2 in 10 drivers see one). Progressive also says Snapshot isn't available from all agents, so we confirm it on each quote. GEICO's DriveEasy runs on your phone's sensors and can also raise a rate at renewal, per Insurify, whose October 2026 comparison lists it as unavailable in five states, none of them Georgia.

Before you enroll in telematics

Both programs reward smooth, daytime, lower-mileage driving and penalize hard braking, speeding, late nights and phone use. If you commute on I-20 at rush hour or work nights in Dalton, ask us how each would treat your pattern first.

Line-by-line help on qualifying for these is in which Georgia auto discounts you qualify for, and bundling math lives in how to bundle home and auto in Georgia.

How Do Progressive and GEICO Compare on Service, Claims and Financial Strength?

The short answer: both are financially very strong, GEICO scored higher in J.D. Power's 2025 Southeast satisfaction study, and both landed below average in its 2025 claims study.

Financial strength is a rating agency's opinion of an insurer's claims-paying ability. AM Best affirmed GEICO's members at A++ (Superior) with a stable outlook in April 2026, and affirmed Progressive's insurance subsidiaries at A+ (Superior) with a stable outlook on May 1, 2026. Both sit in AM Best's top tier, so for a personal auto policy this is close to a tie.

Customer satisfaction. In J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, GEICO scored 670 in the Southeast and Progressive 645, against a regional average of 667, as reported by Insurance.com and MoneyGeek. The 2026 study, released June 9, 2026, ranked Erie first in the Southeast, and Erie doesn't write auto in Georgia. We couldn't confirm 2026 regional scores for these two from J.D. Power's public release, so we show 2025.

Claims. J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study put the industry average at 700, with GEICO at 697 and Progressive at 673, as reported by Insurance.com and Insurify. NerdWallet's October 2026 Georgia page lists below-average claims satisfaction as a Progressive drawback, and MoneyGeek calls GEICO's claims reviews mixed, especially on total losses.

Complaints. The NAIC complaint index compares complaints filed with regulators to a company's size, where 1.00 is expected. NerdWallet says Progressive draws fewer complaints than expected, and Insurify says the same of GEICO. We aren't printing an index figure, because the third-party sites we checked in October 2026 disagree; each brand sells through several separately licensed companies. Look up the exact company on your quote in the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search.

What ratings can't tell you

Aggregate scores don't predict how your claim will go. In our office, we help clients with claims at either carrier, and the claims that go worst are the ones where the coverage was never on the policy to begin with.

Who Tends to Fit Progressive, and Who Tends to Fit GEICO?

The short answer: in our experience GEICO is often competitive for clean-record adults with simple needs, while Progressive often stays in the running for households that need add-ons or have a blemish on the record.

Carrier appetite is the kind of risk an insurer most wants to write. These are patterns from our Ringgold and Augusta offices, not rules.

Clean-record adults, good credit, one or two carsGEICOLower of the two on MoneyGeek's 2026 Georgia benchmarks for this kind of profile

A recent ticket, accident or short lapseBoth, plus othersSurcharge rules differ; quote both and add non-standard carriers
Adding a teen driverBoth, plus othersThe spread between carriers is widest here; see our teen driver guide

In our office, drivers with a recent ticket or short lapse often find Progressive still willing to quote when some standard carriers step back, while GEICO often prices well for a straightforward household with good credit and paid-off cars. Most households are a mix, which is why a side-by-side quote beats a rule of thumb. For another direct-carrier matchup, see Mercury vs. Progressive in Georgia.

Can One Agent Quote Progressive and GEICO Side by Side?

Review date: October 17, 2026. Companies compared: two, because this page answers a two-carrier question. Price data: MoneyGeek's Georgia benchmarks (40-year-old man, good credit, clean record, 100/300/100 liability, $1,000 collision and comprehensive deductibles, uninsured motorist coverage excluded, updated August 26, 2026; cheapest-carrier page updated October 15, 2026, which describes its figures only as clean-record adult rates). Other factors: published coverage and discounts, AM Best strength, J.D. Power satisfaction and claims data, NAIC complaint information. What this isn't: a quote. Your rate depends on your drivers, vehicles, address, record and coverage.

Our full process is in how Richard Johnson Group compares insurance companies, and our appointments are listed in our carrier access and market disclosure. Carrier availability is subject to current appointments and eligibility.

Running both yourself means two websites and two quotes that rarely match on UM form or deductibles. When we do it, both carry identical coverage, and we add carriers you may not have considered. Sometimes the answer is neither. The method is in how to compare car insurance quotes in Georgia.

When Does This Answer Change?

The short answer: any time your household drifts away from the benchmark's clean-record 40-year-old, the winner between these two can change, and sometimes a third carrier beats both.

  • You add a teen driver. The spread is widest here, and the order can reverse. See what adding a teen driver costs in Georgia.
  • You get a ticket, an at-fault accident or a lapse. Surcharge and forgiveness rules differ, and non-standard carriers may enter the picture.
  • You need an SR-22A filing. Pricing can differ sharply. See how Georgia SR-22 insurance works.
  • You finance, lease or drive for an app. Loan/lease payoff and rideshare coverage join the comparison.
  • You bundle a home or renters policy. Multi-policy pricing can move either carrier ahead, and sometimes splitting wins.
  • Your renewal jumps. Carriers are filing in different directions. See why Georgia car insurance rates are going up.
  • You're eligible for USAA. We'll compare it honestly and connect you through our partners if it wins.

The Bottom Line

Progressive and GEICO are both financially strong carriers. GEICO came in lower on the latest published Georgia benchmarks for a clean-record adult and scored higher on J.D. Power's 2025 Southeast study. Progressive publishes the longer add-on menu, from loan/lease payoff and rideshare to custom parts. Georgia's 25/50/25 minimum and UM rules apply to both equally.

None of that tells you which will price your household better. That takes quotes built on identical coverage. We quote both directly from Ringgold and Augusta, along with the rest of our 25 carriers, and we'll tell you plainly if a partner-placed company fits better. One form and we'll show you the spread.

Related questions

Is GEICO cheaper than Progressive for young drivers in Georgia?

There's no clean published head-to-head: MoneyGeek's October 2026 Georgia page lists GEICO rates for drivers 19 to 21 but no comparable Progressive figures. Young-driver pricing is where carriers disagree most, so we quote both. See our teen driver carrier guide.

Can I get Progressive's Name Your Price tool through an agent?

Name Your Price is a budgeting tool on Progressive's own website. With us you get the same idea with a person: tell us your budget, and we'll show what coverage it buys at Progressive, GEICO and our other carriers, and what you'd give up.

Does GEICO offer accident forgiveness in Georgia?

GEICO's accident forgiveness page lists it as not offered in California, Connecticut and Massachusetts, and Georgia isn't on that list. It can be earned free after five accident-free years, and GEICO says the purchasable version isn't offered in every state. We confirm eligibility on your quote.

Frequently asked questions

Is Progressive or GEICO cheaper in Georgia?

On the most recent published benchmarks, GEICO came in lower. MoneyGeek's Georgia ranking, updated August 26, 2026, priced a 40-year-old man with good credit, a clean record, 100/300/100 limits and $1,000 deductibles at $105 a month with GEICO and $118 with Progressive. Its cheapest-carrier page, updated October 15, 2026, shows GEICO at $103 and Progressive at $124 for full coverage. Those are sample-driver averages, not quotes. A teen driver, a ticket, a different ZIP or different credit can reverse the order, so the reliable answer comes from quoting both at identical coverage.

Is GEICO or Progressive better for customer service in Georgia?

In J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, GEICO scored 670 in the Southeast region and Progressive 645, against a regional average of 667. In J.D. Power's 2025 claims study, Insurance.com and Insurify report GEICO at 697 and Progressive at 673, both below the industry average of 700. NerdWallet's Georgia page says Progressive draws fewer complaints than expected for its size, and Insurify says the same of GEICO. Aggregate scores describe many customers, so check the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search for the exact company on your quote.

Are Progressive and GEICO financially strong?

Yes. AM Best affirmed GEICO's members at A++ (Superior) with a stable outlook in April 2026, and affirmed Progressive's insurance subsidiaries at A+ (Superior) with a stable outlook on May 1, 2026. Both ratings sit in AM Best's highest category, which reflects its opinion of each company's ability to pay claims. For a personal auto policy in Georgia, financial strength is not a meaningful difference between these two, so price at identical coverage, add-ons and claims handling usually decide the comparison.

What coverage does Progressive offer that GEICO doesn't publish?

As of October 2026, Progressive's own coverage page lists loan/lease payoff up to 25 percent of actual cash value, custom parts and equipment typically up to $5,000, a rideshare endorsement, pet injury coverage up to $1,000 with collision, and the Deductible Savings Bank, which lowers your deductible $50 for each violation-free and claim-free six-month period. GEICO's public pages we checked did not confirm all of these. GEICO, in turn, publishes mechanical breakdown insurance that can be kept up to seven years or 100,000 miles. We confirm what's available on your Georgia quote.

Can an independent agent quote both Progressive and GEICO?

Some can. Richard Johnson Group holds direct appointments with both Progressive and GEICO, so we can run identical coverage through each in one conversation, along with Mercury, Travelers, National General, American National, Liberty Mutual and others among our 25 carriers. For State Farm, Allstate, USAA and Georgia Farm Bureau, we compare and connect you through our carrier and agency partners. The goal is the right coverage at the best price available to your household, not the lowest number on a mismatched quote.
