Mercury and Travelers both write homeowners insurance in Georgia, and we quote both directly. Travelers carries the stronger ratings record; Mercury brings a Georgia discount list that rewards updated older homes. Here's how they line up, with sources.
Neither company is better for every Georgia home. Travelers holds AM Best's top A++ rating and draws fewer complaints than expected for its size, while Mercury is rated A and draws more. Mercury's Georgia discounts reward renovated older homes, newer homes and gated communities. The better choice is whichever prices your exact house and roof best at identical coverage.
- Both sell through independent agents, so one agency can quote them side by side.
- Travelers has the stronger ratings record: A++ from AM Best and fewer complaints than expected.
- Mercury has the more Georgia-specific discounts, including Updated Home for renovated older houses.
- 2026 Georgia price studies include Travelers but not Mercury, so only a quote compares them fairly.
Do this: set the dwelling limit and deductibles first, then have us run that exact coverage through both, plus the rest of our 25 carriers, with roof terms and storm deductible shown in dollars.
You have a Mercury quote and a Travelers quote a few hundred dollars apart. Or you're with one of them, the renewal jumped, and you wonder whether the other would treat your house better. Which is the better home insurer for a Georgia house, and is the cheaper quote cheaper for a good reason?
We hold direct appointments with both companies, so we aren't steering you toward the one we represent. What follows is how they compare on what matters after a Georgia hailstorm: financial strength, complaints, coverage options, discounts and what published prices do and don't tell you.

How Do Mercury and Travelers Compare for Georgia Homeowners?
The short answer: Travelers leads on financial strength and complaint record, Mercury leads on Georgia-specific discounts for updated and newer homes, and both offer the core endorsements most Georgia homeowners should be asking about.
This is the side-by-side we walk through in our office, built only from what each carrier publishes. Where a carrier doesn't publish something, we say so rather than guess.

Most rows are optional endorsements with their own limits and prices, so two quotes only compare once the same ones are on both. See how to compare home insurance quotes in Georgia.
Which Georgia Homes Tend to Fit Mercury, and Which Fit Travelers?
The short answer: in our office experience, Travelers tends to suit homeowners who put financial strength first, while Mercury tends to suit renovated older homes, newer homes and households with Mercury auto. Underwriting decides the rest.
These are patterns we see, not promises. Both carriers underwrite each home on its own facts and adjust their appetite as the market moves.
In our office the roof usually decides between these two, not the premium. With a newer roof, both are often competitive and the choice comes down to endorsements and price. With an older roof, settlement terms can differ more than premiums, so we compare those first.
We also see many Georgia homeowners who chose a carrier for their car and let the home follow it. Sometimes that's right; sometimes the bundle discount hides a weaker home policy. Our guide on how to bundle home and auto in Georgia explains how we run it both ways, and the car side of this matchup is in Mercury vs. Progressive car insurance in Georgia.
Is Mercury or Travelers Cheaper for Home Insurance in Georgia?
The short answer: there's no published head-to-head answer. MoneyGeek's October 2026 Georgia data prices Travelers at $1,981 a year on a $250,000 sample home, but neither MoneyGeek nor ValuePenguin includes Mercury, so the only fair price comparison is a quote on your house.
MoneyGeek's Georgia study, updated October 1, 2026, priced a home built in 2000 with $250,000 of dwelling coverage, $125,000 of personal property, $200,000 of liability and a $1,000 deductible, for an owner with good credit and no claims in five years. Travelers averaged $1,981 a year, third-lowest in the table, against a $2,258 Georgia average.
Source: MoneyGeek Georgia homeowners rates, updated October 1, 2026. Sample-house averages, not quotes. How we cite rate data is in our sourcing standards.
The same data shows how fast the number moves: Travelers averaged $948 at $100,000 of dwelling coverage, $2,297 with one claim in five years and $2,549 with below-fair credit. A single average says little about your quote.
Mercury doesn't appear in MoneyGeek's Georgia table or ValuePenguin's September 2026 Georgia study, and we won't fill that gap with an undated figure. No sourced 2026 benchmark puts Mercury and Travelers on the same Georgia house.
Published averages price one sample house. Your premium depends on rebuild cost, roof, construction, claims, credit-based insurance score, deductibles and location. For the wider picture, see how much homeowners insurance costs in Georgia and the cheapest homeowners insurance in Georgia.
What Coverage Options Do Mercury and Travelers Offer in Georgia?
The short answer: both offer extra rebuild cost, water backup, identity theft help and green rebuilding. Mercury adds appliance breakdown, service line and cyber options; Travelers adds special personal property and contents replacement cost.
An endorsement is an add-on that changes what the base policy covers, usually for extra premium. The differences between these two live there.
Mercury's published homeowners options
Mercury's December 2022 Georgia release lists Home Systems Protection, Home Cyber Protection and Service Line Protection among the products it offers in Georgia.
- Extended Replacement Cost pays above your dwelling limit if rebuilding costs more. NerdWallet's 2026 review describes it as up to 150 percent of the limit; the Georgia percentage is set on the quote.
- Identity Management Services: monitoring and restoration help, with up to $25,000 for expenses.
- Home Systems Protection: equipment breakdown for HVAC, security systems and major appliances.
- Service Line Protection: underground water, sewer, electrical and gas lines, up to $10,000 per occurrence. Georgia was in the February 2018 launch.
- Home Cyber Protection for data breaches, cyber extortion and online fraud, and water backup, which NerdWallet lists as optional.
- Green Home, Matching of Undamaged Siding and Roofing, and Refrigerated Products, announced for Georgia in December 2022. Green Home adds up to 10 percent above replacement cost for eco-friendly rebuilding; refrigerated products covers up to $1,000 of spoiled food.
Travelers' published homeowners options
- Additional replacement cost protection if your dwelling limit falls short.
- Special personal property coverage for belongings in more situations.
- Contents replacement cost, with special limits on jewelry and watches.
- Water backup and sump pump discharge or overflow, up to a set dollar amount; not flood or surface water.
- Identity fraud expense reimbursement up to $25,000.
- Green home coverage, plus valuables options and a personal articles floater.
Travelers introduced a Decreasing Deductible feature with Quantum Home 2.0 in February 2018. Its current coverage pages don't list it, so we confirm on each Georgia quote rather than assume.
Water backup. A standard policy generally doesn't pay when a sewer or drain backs up, and flood insurance usually doesn't either. With a finished basement or a sump pump, ask what limit is on each quote.
Which Discounts Do Mercury and Travelers Offer Georgia Homeowners?
The short answer: both name multi-policy, protective device and green home discounts. Travelers adds homebuyer and loss-free discounts; Mercury adds newer home, updated home, gated community, fire-resistant construction and good payer discounts.
| Discount | Mercury (Georgia) | Travelers |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-policy | AUTO + HOME discount | Multi-policy |
| Protective devices | Protective Devices | Protective device, incl. smart-home alerts |
| Green certified home | Green Home, up to 5% (2022 release) | Green home, up to 5% (LEED) |
| Recent purchase | Not named on the Georgia page | Homebuyer, within 12 months |
| Claim-free history | Not named on the Georgia page | Loss-free |
| Newer or updated home | Newer Home; Updated Home | Not named |
| Location and construction | Gated Community; Fire-Resistant Construction | Not named |
| Payment history | Good Payer | Not named |
Sources: Mercury's Georgia homeowners page and December 2022 Georgia release; Travelers' home insurance discounts page, checked October 17, 2026. Discounts are subject to underwriting and state availability and may not apply to every coverage.
The Mercury discount most Georgia homeowners never hear about: in its December 2022 Georgia release, Mercury described Updated Home as up to 10 percent off the wind and water perils for homes over 20 years old with permitted renovations, such as a new roof or HVAC, in the last 10 years. Those were 2022 figures; current amounts come from filed rates.
Travelers' homebuyer discount applies when you bought within 12 months of the policy start, which makes it worth quoting at closing. Its protective device discount includes smart-home technology that alerts you to fire or burglary.
How Do Mercury and Travelers Compare on Ratings, Complaints and Satisfaction?
The short answer: Travelers comes out ahead on all three published measures. It holds an A++ AM Best rating to Mercury's A, draws fewer complaints than expected against Mercury's far more, and ranked higher than Mercury in J.D. Power's 2025 home study, though both sat below average.
Financial strength. AM Best rates an insurer's ability to pay claims. On August 21, 2026, AM Best affirmed Travelers Group's rating at A++ (Superior), the highest on its scale, with a stable outlook. In February 2026, AM Best affirmed the Mercury Casualty Group at A (Excellent) and revised its outlook to stable from negative after the January 2025 California wildfires. Both clear the A- benchmark we use.
Complaints. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners tracks complaints filed with state regulators. In NerdWallet's February 2026 reviews, built on three years of NAIC data, Travelers drew fewer homeowners complaints than expected for its size, while Mercury drew far more than expected. You can check any company yourself through the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search.
Customer satisfaction. In J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Home Insurance Study, Travelers ranked 20th of 28 home insurers, per Carrier Management, and NerdWallet reports Mercury scored near the bottom. The 2026 study, released September 15, ranked Amica first at 680, then Erie and Chubb; neither Mercury nor Travelers placed in the top three.
Complaint and satisfaction data are national, not Georgia-specific. They describe averages, not how your adjuster will handle your claim. We weigh them alongside the roof terms and storm deductible on your actual policy.

We quote both directly. Mercury and Travelers are two of our 25 direct appointments and both are among our direct home markets in Georgia. Both sell through independent agents: Mercury's 2026 fact sheet lists 8,510 of them in 11 states alongside its online channel, and Travelers notes that in certain states some products are available only through a local independent agent.
How we compared. Reviewed October 17, 2026. Coverage and discounts from each carrier's published pages; financial strength from AM Best; complaints and 2025 satisfaction from NerdWallet's February 2026 reviews and J.D. Power coverage; prices from MoneyGeek's October 2026 Georgia sample home ($250,000 dwelling, built 2000, $1,000 deductible). Benchmarks are not quotes. How Do Georgia Roofs, Storms and Non-Renewals Change the Choice?
The short answer: in Georgia the roof settlement terms and the wind and hail deductible can matter more than the carrier name. Compare both in dollars on the Mercury and Travelers quotes before you compare premiums.
Georgia's homeowners market is under pressure. The state's homeowners loss ratio reached 112 percent in 2024, meaning insurers paid out more in losses than they collected in premium, according to R Street Institute. When losses run that high, carriers adjust the fine print as well as the rate (more in why Georgia home insurance rates keep going up). Check these on both quotes:
- Roof settlement. Replacement cost pays today's price for a new roof; actual cash value (ACV) subtracts depreciation. A roof schedule is a table that shifts older roofs toward ACV. Get each carrier's terms for your roof in writing.
- Wind and hail deductible. A percentage deductible is calculated on the dwelling limit. On $300,000, 2 percent is $6,000.
- Matching. Mercury announced a matching endorsement for undamaged siding and roofing in Georgia in 2022. Ask Travelers how its Georgia policy handles matching.
- Renewal stability. For homeowners policies issued, delivered or renewed on or after January 1, 2026, Georgia insurers must mail or deliver a non-renewal notice at least 60 days before the policy ends, up from 30, under O.C.G.A. Β§ 33-24-46(d)(1) as amended by SB 35 (Act 277, 2025). See home insurance after a non-renewal in Georgia.
Geography matters too. In North Georgia, hail drives most of the home claim conversations in our Ringgold office, so roof terms dominate the comparison. Near the coast, wind exposure and named-storm deductibles come into play, and flood is always a separate policy. Around Augusta, which took heavy wind and tree losses from Hurricane Helene, we've seen renewal terms tighten across the market after storms like that, not at one carrier.
A Columbia County homeowner has two quotes on a $300,000 home with a 16-year-old shingle roof. Quote A is $180 a year cheaper. A hailstorm destroys the roof, and replacement costs $16,000.
The cheaper quote pays $12,500 less at claim time. Figures are illustrative and not tied to either carrier; roof schedules, depreciation and deductibles vary by policy.
When Does This Answer Change?
The short answer: the comparison above fits a typical owner-occupied Georgia home. These situations can flip which carrier fits, or take both off the table.
- Your roof is old or just replaced. A new roof can make both competitive; re-quote after a replacement.
- You've filed recent claims. MoneyGeek shows Travelers' sample price rising from $1,981 to $2,297 with one claim.
- You live near the coast. Wind deductibles and appetite change sharply, and flood needs its own policy. See Georgia flood insurance costs.
- You were non-renewed or declined. We look at specialty markets and, as a last resort, the Georgia FAIR plan.
- The house is a rental or manufactured home. Different policies, different leading carriers.
- You're comparing big direct writers instead. See State Farm vs. Allstate home insurance in Georgia, and the full field in the best home insurance companies in Georgia.
The Bottom Line
Mercury and Travelers both write Georgia homeowners insurance through independent agents and both offer the core endorsements worth asking about. Travelers has the stronger published record: A++ from AM Best and fewer complaints than expected. Mercury has the more Georgia-specific discounts, especially for renovated older homes, plus service line and home systems add-ons.
No published source tells you which prices your house better. Set the coverage first, then compare roof terms, the wind and hail deductible in dollars, and price, in that order. We quote both directly, alongside the rest of our 25 carriers, and we'll tell you plainly when neither is the best fit. Start on our Georgia home insurance page or go straight to a home quote.
Related questions
Yes. Mercury's Georgia homeowners page lists dwelling, personal property, extended replacement cost, additional living expenses, liability, guest medical and identity theft coverage, and its 2026 fact sheet names Georgia among its 10 homeowners states. It sells through independent agents, including our office, and online.
On financial strength and complaints, yes: AM Best affirmed its A++ rating in August 2026, and NerdWallet's NAIC analysis shows fewer complaints than expected. Its 2025 J.D. Power satisfaction ranking was below average, so compare its roof and deductible terms against other carriers on your home.
Rate publishers choose which insurers to sample, and neither MoneyGeek's nor ValuePenguin's 2026 Georgia study included Mercury. That isn't a sign it's expensive or cheap. It just means a real quote is the only way to compare Mercury's Georgia price with anyone else's.
Not in the base policy. Both offer it as an optional endorsement with its own dollar limit, and neither version covers flood or surface water. If you have a basement or sump pump, ask for the limit on each quote and compare it alongside the price. Our quote comparison checklist covers it.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mercury or Travelers better for home insurance in Georgia?
It depends on the house. Travelers has the stronger published record, with an A++ (Superior) AM Best rating affirmed in August 2026 and fewer homeowners complaints than expected in NerdWallet's analysis of three years of NAIC data. Mercury is rated A (Excellent) and draws more complaints than expected, but it publishes Georgia discounts for newer homes, renovated older homes, gated communities and fire-resistant construction. Both offer extended replacement cost, water backup, identity theft help and green rebuilding coverage. The better choice for you is whichever prices your exact house and roof best at identical coverage and deductibles.
Is Mercury cheaper than Travelers for Georgia homeowners insurance?
No published 2026 study answers that, because none prices both on the same Georgia house. MoneyGeek's October 2026 Georgia data puts Travelers at $1,981 a year on a $250,000 sample home built in 2000 with a $1,000 deductible, against a $2,258 state average in the same study. Mercury doesn't appear in MoneyGeek's or ValuePenguin's Georgia tables. Your price from either carrier depends on rebuild cost, roof age, claims history, credit and location, so the only fair comparison is a quote on your home with matching coverage.
What AM Best ratings do Mercury and Travelers have?
AM Best affirmed Travelers Group's financial strength rating at A++ (Superior), the highest on its scale, with a stable outlook on August 21, 2026. In February 2026 AM Best affirmed the Mercury Casualty Group at A (Excellent) and revised its outlook to stable from negative after reviewing Mercury's losses from the January 2025 California wildfires and its expanded reinsurance program. Both ratings are above the A- level we use as a minimum benchmark. Financial strength measures an insurer's ability to pay claims, not its price or service.
What discounts do Mercury and Travelers offer on Georgia home insurance?
Both name multi-policy, protective device and green home discounts. Travelers also publishes a homebuyer discount for homes bought within 12 months of the policy start and a loss-free discount for customers without recent claims. Mercury's Georgia page also lists Newer Home, Gated Community, Fire-Resistant Construction Materials, Good Payer and higher-deductible savings, and Mercury announced an Updated Home discount in 2022 for homes over 20 years old with permitted renovations in the last 10 years. Discounts depend on underwriting and state filings.
Can one independent agent quote both Mercury and Travelers in Georgia?
Yes, if the agency holds both appointments. Both companies sell homeowners insurance through independent agents, and Richard Johnson Group quotes Mercury and Travelers directly as two of our 25 carrier appointments. That lets us run the same dwelling limit, deductibles and endorsements through both and show you the roof terms, storm deductible and price side by side. For State Farm, Allstate, USAA or Georgia Farm Bureau, we compare honestly and connect you through our carrier and agency partners when one of them fits better.
