State Farm and Allstate are the home insurance names most Georgians know. This guide lines up 2026 prices, coverage, discounts, ratings and the Georgia roof and storm terms that matter more than the logo, from an independent agency that places both through partners.
Neither State Farm nor Allstate is better for every Georgia home. In MoneyGeek's September 2026 Georgia data Allstate was cheaper on a $250,000 home ($2,112 vs. $2,656 a year), while ValuePenguin named State Farm Georgia's cheapest insurer at $1,770 on a $350,000 home. Both hold AM Best A+ ratings. Your roof, credit and storm deductible decide the winner.
- The cheaper company flips by study and by house.
- State Farm leans on local agents; Allstate on packaged features like Claim RateGuard.
- Both are AM Best A+. State Farm was lowered from A++ in November 2025.
- Neither is a direct appointment for us. We place both through partners.
Do this: get both quotes at the same dwelling limit, the same wind and hail deductible and the same roof settlement terms, then put that exact profile against other carriers too. One form, and we'll show you the spread instead of two numbers.
Your neighbor swears by State Farm. Your brother-in-law just switched to Allstate and saved a few hundred dollars. Your own renewal went up again, and you want to know which of the two big names is actually better for a house in Georgia. The honest answer: it depends on your house more than on either company.
This is the comparison we walk homeowners through in our Ringgold and Augusta offices. We're independent, so we don't have a horse in this race. We place State Farm and Allstate through our carrier and agency partners and quote 25 carriers directly, so we'll show you where each fits and where something else might fit better.

Is State Farm or Allstate Better for Home Insurance in Georgia?
The short answer: State Farm tends to suit homeowners who want a strong local-agent relationship, and Allstate those who want packaged features like claim forgiveness. Price decides the rest, and price depends on the house.
Homeowners insurance pays to repair or rebuild your house, replace your belongings and cover your liability if someone is hurt on your property. State Farm and Allstate both sell it in Georgia through captive agents, who sell only one company. Walk into either office and you get one company's answer.
In our office, the two attract different households. State Farm customers usually value the agent down the street more than any single feature, often with auto, home and life in one place. Allstate customers are more often drawn by a specific promise, like a rate that won't rise after one claim. Neither preference is wrong. They point to different policies.
| If this describes you | Often a closer fit | Why, in our experience |
|---|---|---|
| You want one local agent for home, auto and life | State Farm | Large agent network; J.D. Power ranked it highest for renters in 2026 |
| You worry one claim will spike your rate | Allstate | Claim RateGuard, where offered, keeps your rate from rising after a claim |
| Your credit is below average | Allstate | NerdWallet's February 2026 poor-credit sample priced Allstate $1,300 lower, and MoneyGeek's Georgia below-fair-credit data had Allstate $1,321 lower |
| Your roof is 15 years or older | Quote both, plus others | Roof terms matter more than brand |
| You rent the home out part time | Quote both | Allstate offers HostAdvantage and State Farm offers home rental coverage, per NerdWallet; terms differ |
Those are tendencies, not rules. For the broader market, see the best home insurance companies in Georgia for 2026.
Which Is Cheaper in Georgia, State Farm or Allstate?
The short answer: it depends on the study and the house. MoneyGeek's 2026 Georgia data had Allstate about $544 a year cheaper on a $250,000 home, while ValuePenguin's 2026 data named State Farm Georgia's cheapest major insurer on a $350,000 home.
A published premium is an average for one sample house, not a quote for yours. Here's what the most detailed 2026 data shows.
Sources: MoneyGeek, Sept 7, 2026: home built in 2000, $250,000 dwelling, $200,000 liability, $1,000 deductible, good credit. ValuePenguin, Sept 25, 2026: 292,768 quotes, 777 Georgia ZIPs, $350,000 dwelling. Benchmarks, not quotes. How we cite figures is in our sourcing standards.
MoneyGeek priced its Georgia home seven ways, and Allstate came in lower every time, for example $1,607 vs. $1,987 for a newer home. ValuePenguin, pricing a larger home across far more ZIPs, found State Farm Georgia's cheapest insurer at $1,770, about $870 below its $2,640 state average. It didn't publish a statewide Allstate figure.
NerdWallet's February 2026 national head-to-head shows why credit matters. On a $400,000 home with good credit, State Farm averaged $2,415 and Allstate $2,715. Switch the same profile to poor credit and the order reversed: Allstate $4,790, State Farm $6,090, according to NerdWallet's comparison. One rating factor changed the winner.
Match the dwelling limit, deductibles and roof settlement first. In our office the most common reason two Georgia home quotes are "$500 apart" is that one carries a 2 percent wind and hail deductible and the other a flat $1,000. Our checklist is in how to compare home insurance quotes in Georgia.

How Do State Farm and Allstate Home Policies Differ on Coverage?
The short answer: the core homeowners coverage is similar, but State Farm stands out for equipment breakdown and a built-in dwelling cushion in many quotes, while Allstate stands out for packaged claim and deductible features.
Both write a standard policy covering the dwelling, other structures, personal property, loss of use and liability. The differences are in endorsements, optional coverages you add to the base policy for extra premium.
| Coverage or feature | State Farm | Allstate |
|---|---|---|
| Water backup (sewer or drain) | Offered | Offered |
| Service line (buried water, sewer, power lines) | Offered | Offered |
| Equipment breakdown (HVAC, appliances) | Offered | Not in NerdWallet's online quote |
| Ordinance or law (code upgrades after a loss) | Offered | Offered |
| Extra dwelling cushion | 20% included in NerdWallet's default quote | Extended replacement cost, extra cost |
| Claim forgiveness | Not advertised | Claim RateGuard, in higher packages |
| Deductible credits | Not advertised | Deductible Rewards, up to $500 |
| Renting out or home sharing | Home rental coverage | HostAdvantage |
| Yard and garden | Not advertised | Offered |
Sources: NerdWallet's State Farm and Allstate reviews, Feb 20, 2026. Availability varies by state; confirm each on your Georgia quote.
State Farm's standouts. Equipment breakdown pays for a furnace, heat pump or water heater that fails mechanically, which a standard policy excludes. NerdWallet's State Farm quotes also included an extra 20 percent of dwelling coverage, a cushion for when rebuilding costs jump after a storm.
Allstate's standouts. In its more inclusive packages, NerdWallet describes Claim RateGuard (your rate doesn't rise because of a claim), Claim-Free Rewards (5 percent back per claim-free year) and Deductible Rewards ($100 off at signup plus $100 per claim-free year, up to $500). NerdWallet's Allstate review adds that its Enhanced Package must be added within 60 days of buying the policy to get all the benefits. Features vary by state, so ask: "Which of these are on my Georgia policy, and what do they cost?"
Water backup. Standard policies typically exclude water that backs up through a drain or sump, and it's one of the claims we see denied most often after heavy North Georgia rain. Ask for it by name.
Which Discounts Do State Farm and Allstate Offer Georgia Homeowners?
The short answer: both offer bundling, claim-free and protective-device discounts. Allstate publishes a longer list, while State Farm's standout in Georgia is a discount for impact-resistant roofing.
Discount names and eligibility vary by state, so treat this as a checklist.
State Farm's discount page lists Georgia among the 26 states where certain hail-resistant or Class 4 shingles qualify, with a certification form required. Replacing a roof anyway? Ask before you pick shingles, with any carrier.
Bundling deserves a second look. In November 2025 State Farm's Georgia auto rates had come down an average of over 10 percent in the prior year, according to the Georgia Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire. Still, two carriers sometimes beat one bundle. See how to bundle home and auto insurance in Georgia.
How Do Their Ratings, Complaints and Satisfaction Scores Compare?
The short answer: both are rated A+ (Superior) by AM Best, both draw an average share of home insurance complaints, and State Farm scored higher than Allstate in J.D. Power's 2025 home satisfaction study.
State Farm. On November 14, 2025, AM Best lowered the financial strength rating of the State Farm Group to A+ (Superior) from A++ and revised the outlook to stable from negative, citing elevated auto and homeowners loss ratios and heavy weather losses, according to AM Best's release. The State Farm Group is State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, State Farm Fire and Casualty Company (the company that writes State Farm homeowners policies in Georgia) and State Farm County Mutual of Texas. State Farm General, the California company, is rated separately. A+ is still AM Best's second-highest rating.
Allstate. AM Best affirmed A+ (Superior), stable, for the members of Allstate Insurance Group on September 2, 2026 (AM Best release via Business Wire), after a similar affirmation in August 2025.
Complaints. The NAIC complaint index compares complaints with market share. NerdWallet's February 2026 reviews, using three years of NAIC data, found both draw an average share of home complaints, and ValuePenguin's September 2026 Georgia page agrees. You can look either company up yourself in the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search.
Customer satisfaction. J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Home Insurance Study (September 15, 2026; 17,191 customers) published scores only for its top three homeowners brands: Amica (680), Erie (678) and Chubb (676), per the J.D. Power release. The same release ranked State Farm highest in the renters segment at 702. The most recent published scores for these two come from J.D. Power's 2025 home study, which MoneyGeek's September 2026 Georgia ranking lists as 657 for State Farm and 633 for Allstate, against a 642 study average. NerdWallet also reports both scored below average in J.D. Power's 2025 property claims study.
What Georgia Factors Matter More Than the Brand Name?
The short answer: your wind and hail deductible, how your roof is settled after a claim, where in Georgia the house sits and whether the carrier is still writing homes like yours at renewal. Those terms move claim checks by thousands.
Georgia's homeowners market has been under real strain. The state's homeowners loss ratio reached 112 percent in 2024, meaning insurers paid more in claims than they collected in premium, according to R Street Institute's analysis. Carriers respond by tightening the fine print; see why Georgia home insurance rates keep going up. Check these on every quote:
- Wind and hail deductible. Often a percentage of the dwelling limit. On a $350,000 home, 2 percent is $7,000 before storm damage is paid. Get it in dollars.
- Coastal hurricane deductibles. Coastal homes can carry a separate named-storm deductible, and appetite there shifts fast. Flood is always separate; see what flood insurance costs in Georgia.
- Roof settlement. Replacement cost buys a new roof. Actual cash value pays the depreciated old one, often via a roof schedule that pays less as the roof ages.
- North Georgia hail. In the Ringgold office, spring hail and straight-line wind drive more home claims than anything else we see.
- Non-renewal. If either company declines to renew you, see home insurance after a non-renewal in Georgia.
An Augusta homeowner has two quotes on a $300,000 home with a 16-year-old roof. Quote A is $300 a year cheaper. A spring hailstorm destroys the roof, and replacement costs $16,000.
The "cheaper" policy saved $300 a year and cost $13,000 at claim time. Figures are illustrative; schedules and deductibles vary by carrier and policy.
Can Richard Johnson Group Quote State Farm and Allstate?
The short answer: not directly. State Farm and Allstate are captive carriers that sell through their own agents, so we place them through our carrier and agency partners. We also quote 11 home carriers directly, so you see more than two options.
Who we can quote for Georgia home insurance
| Carrier | Richard Johnson Group |
|---|---|
| State Farm, Allstate | Through carrier and agency partners, not a direct appointment |
| Cincinnati Insurance, Travelers, Liberty Mutual, The Hanover | Quote directly |
| Universal Property, Homeowners of America, Orion180 | Quote directly |
| American Modern, Foremost, Mercury, American National | Quote directly |
We hold 25 direct appointments across all lines; the 11 above are our direct home markets. State Farm and Allstate are not direct appointments. When one looks like the better fit, we'll say so and connect you through our partners, as we do for USAA and Georgia Farm Bureau.
How we compared. Published data only, reviewed October 2026: MoneyGeek (Georgia, $250,000 dwelling), ValuePenguin (Georgia, $350,000 dwelling), NerdWallet (national, $400,000 dwelling, $300,000 liability, $1,000 deductible), plus AM Best, J.D. Power and NAIC data as reported. Two companies, because this is a head-to-head. We weigh price, roof and storm terms, financial strength, complaints, satisfaction and endorsements. Benchmarks are not quotes. Our full approach is in how Richard Johnson Group compares insurance companies, and the complete carrier list is in our carrier access and market disclosure.
In our office, a third carrier often prices the same house competitively, especially with an older roof or rural acreage. For a head-to-head between two carriers we quote directly, see Mercury vs. Travelers home insurance in Georgia.

When Does This Answer Change?
The short answer: whenever your house or household differs from the studies' sample homes, which is most of the time.
- Your credit changes. In NerdWallet's 2026 national data, a move from good to poor credit flipped the cheaper company from State Farm to Allstate.
- Your roof passes 15 years. Roof terms can outweigh base price. Add carriers that specialize in older roofs.
- You file a claim. Allstate's Claim RateGuard, where it's on your policy, is built for this. Otherwise renewal pricing can react.
- Your home is higher value. The studies priced $250,000 to $400,000 dwellings. Above that, compare extended replacement cost terms.
- You've been non-renewed. Specialty markets come in, with the Georgia FAIR plan as the last resort.
- It's a rental or manufactured home. Different policy; Foremost and American Modern specialize there.
- You're in northwest Georgia. Rural fire protection and hail drive pricing. See the best home insurance in Ringgold, Georgia.
Don't choose on premium alone. Compare the wind and hail deductible in dollars and the roof settlement terms first. Those decide what you collect after a Georgia storm.
The Bottom Line
State Farm and Allstate are both strong, A+ rated home insurers with an average complaint record in Georgia. State Farm tends to fit homeowners who want one local agent and add-ons like equipment breakdown. Allstate tends to fit homeowners who value Claim RateGuard and Deductible Rewards, and it was cheaper in MoneyGeek's 2026 Georgia data on a $250,000 home, while ValuePenguin favored State Farm on a $350,000 home. Neither priced your house.

It depends on the roof more than the house's age. Georgia's underwriting rule says insurers must give proper consideration to updated mechanical and structural systems when weighing a home's age, but roof schedules still vary. Quote both, then carriers that specialize in older roofs, at the same deductible.
Allstate offers Claim RateGuard in its more inclusive policy packages, and availability varies by state. Ask the Allstate agent, or ask us when we place Allstate through our partners, whether it's on your Georgia quote and what it adds to the premium.
Yes, you can buy home and auto from different companies; you just won't get that carrier's multi-policy discount. Sometimes a split beats a bundle. Our guide to bundling home and auto in Georgia shows how we run it both ways.
Not automatically. The carrier sets the rate either way. The difference is reach: a captive agent quotes one company, while an independent agency compares several, including a third carrier that may price your house best.
Frequently asked questions
Is State Farm or Allstate cheaper for home insurance in Georgia?
It depends on the study and the house. MoneyGeek's September 2026 Georgia data, pricing a $250,000 home built in 2000 with a $1,000 deductible and good credit, put Allstate at $2,112 a year and State Farm at $2,656, and Allstate was lower in all seven home types it priced. ValuePenguin's September 2026 data, pricing a $350,000 home across 777 Georgia ZIP codes, named State Farm the state's cheapest insurer at $1,770. Credit, roof age and dwelling limit can flip the order, so the only reliable answer is a quote on your own house at identical coverage.
Are State Farm and Allstate financially strong?
Yes. Both hold an A+ (Superior) financial strength rating from AM Best, its second-highest rating. In November 2025 AM Best lowered the State Farm Group, which includes State Farm Fire and Casualty Company, the company that writes State Farm homeowners policies in Georgia, to A+ from A++, citing elevated auto and homeowners loss ratios and heavy weather losses, and revised the outlook to stable. AM Best affirmed A+ with a stable outlook for the members of Allstate Insurance Group in September 2026. An AM Best rating of A- or better is the usual benchmark for a home insurer, and both companies clear it comfortably.
What coverage does State Farm offer that Allstate doesn't?
The clearest difference in published reviews is equipment breakdown coverage, which pays for sudden mechanical or electrical failure of home systems like a furnace or heat pump. NerdWallet's February 2026 comparison found State Farm offers it and that it wasn't available in its online Allstate quote. NerdWallet's sample State Farm quotes also included an extra 20 percent of dwelling coverage by default, which Allstate offers as extended replacement cost for an added charge. Allstate, in turn, offers packaged features State Farm doesn't advertise, such as Claim RateGuard and Deductible Rewards. Availability varies by state.
Do State Farm and Allstate have a lot of complaints in Georgia?
Neither stands out. The NAIC complaint index compares complaints to a company's market share, and NerdWallet's February 2026 reviews, based on three years of NAIC data, found both State Farm and Allstate draw an average proportion of home insurance complaints. ValuePenguin's September 2026 Georgia page also rates both as average, so neither is an outlier. You can check either company in the NAIC Consumer Insurance Search, and the Georgia Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire takes consumer complaints.
Can an independent agent quote State Farm and Allstate home insurance?
Usually not directly, because State Farm and Allstate are captive carriers that sell through their own agents. Richard Johnson Group places both through its carrier and agency partners, so we can still tell you when one of them looks like the best fit for your Georgia home. We also quote 11 home carriers directly, including Cincinnati Insurance, Travelers, Liberty Mutual and The Hanover, out of 25 direct appointments. That lets us put one home profile against State Farm, Allstate and the rest of the market so you see the full spread.
